The Planning Profession in Today's Australia
This speech will commence with a brief comparison of urban growth
trends in Australia and China,highlighting the differences and
similarities in the challenges facing professional planners in the
two countries.The division of responsibilities for city planning
across the various spheres of government in Australia will be
explained,including the ongoing need for reform,particularly with
respect to the role of the Australian Government in fostering
sustainable development.The tow-fold mission of the Planning
Institute of Australiapolicy advocacy and professional development
will be outlined.Finally,the speech willtouch on the opportunities
for continuing professional exchange between planners from Australia
and China.

Marcus Spiller
Marcus Spiller is the National President of the Planning Institute
of Australia.He holds a Bachelor of Town and Regional Planning
Degree and a Master of Commerce Degree from the University of
Melbourne.He has over 25 years experience as a professional planner
and has worked in local goverrment,regional government and national
government settings.He in currently a Director with SGS Economics
and Planning Pty Ltd,an Australian consultancy firm focussing on the
economic and financial aspects of urban policy including
infrastructure planning,housing programs and local employment and
investment attraction schemes.Marcus is an adjunct Professor of
Urban Management at the University of Canberra.He is also a Director
of VicUrban,the Government owned land development company operating
in the State of Victoria.
